The Skateboard Host is responsible for overseeing activities in a skate park and monitors the safety and behaviour of participants in skate park programs or activities. The Skateboard Host plans, leads and oversees games and activities, assists in planning and carrying out special events, leads groups in providing basic skills instruction, and performs a variety of routine clerical duties including data collection and reporting. These are auxiliary opportunities involving daytime, evening and weekend work in select skateboard parks in Vancouver between June and September.
Specific Duties/Responsibilities
Plans, leads and oversees games and activities related to skateboarding
Acts as a skateboarding steward and encouraging the public to see the benefits of this sport while debunking negative stereotypes.
Plans and implement lessons, activities, games and events.
Conducts regular inspections of the skate facility to improve site safety and maintenance.
Reports graffiti, hazards or encampments and remove litter and needles.
Educates users about skate park etiquette
Mitigates issues, manages group dynamics and responds directly to complaints and inquiries from the public.
Provides outreach and engagement to marginalized young people including IBPOC, female-identified and 2SLGBTQIA+ youth.
Encourages more female-identified participation in a sport that has been historically male-dominate.
Provides expertise and connections with the skate community that benefit other City staff in conducting research, organizing events, or developing skateboard programming.
Deals calmly, effectively and non-violently with conflicts, problems or emergency situations.
Sets up space which could include setting up tents, tables, chairs, audio-visual equipment.
Assists in planning and carrying out special events or programs such as game nights.
Develop and foster healthy relationships with skate park patrons.
Ensures participants adhere to rules and regulations.
Takes and reports attendance.
Answers inquiries and provides routine information regarding programs and facilities.
Implements emergency procedures, as required.
